Many families have been raising the white flag to signal desperate times during the COVID-19 pandemic. One family in Jitra, Kedah was identified by Inner Wheel Club of Alor Setar (IWC AS) as severely disadvantaged.

The family comprises a grandmother, who is single-handedly raising four grandchildren, after the older two grandsons had lost their jobs. Their squatter home is located in the midst of some jungle and the family survives with the barest minimum of furniture as well as hand-outs from well-wishers. IWC AS had helped twice before, but their abject poverty continued to tug at the heart strings of Club Treasurer Dr. Nesamani.

On 15 September 2021, through the generous contribution of Dr. Nesamani, IWC AS donated provisions, personal care items, cooking utensils, chairs and medicine to this very grateful family.

IWC AS hopes that the restaurants where the two grandsons were working would resume full operations soon and both the boys could be gainfully employed, to ease the burden of this grandmother. In her twilight years, she is still struggling to make ends meet and IWC AS hopes that her hardship can be alleviated when the COVID-19 pandemic situation improves and life can assume some semblance of normalcy.
