On 7th October 2021, the Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur (IWCKL) held its fourth General Meeting. It was a meeting with a difference. In conjunction with World Alzheimer’s Month, IWCKL invited Puan Sri Wendy Ong, the Patron of Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation of Malaysia (ADFM) to share the importance of preventing Alzheimer’s  disease, and ADFM’s role in supporting  people with dementia, their carers and the dementia community.

A note of interest here. IWCKL Honorary Member, Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong is one of the founding members of ADFM, 24 years ago.  A total of 43 members of IWCKL also warmly welcomed ADFM’s Honorary Chairman, Datuk Dr Yim Khai Kee to this virtual talk.

From this session, members learnt that the greatest causal factor is advancing age. Members were informed that dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability, severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s Disease  which will worsen with age, is a specific disease and the most common form of dementia. Caregivers are at risk of significant health issues and they too need help and support.

Preventing or slowing down the onset of Alzheimer’s can include regular exercise, a healthy diet, adequate mental stimulation, good stress management and an active social life.

During the meeting, approval was granted to hand a cheque of RM5,000  to ADFM for their ‘10,000,000 Steps to Early Diagnosis’, a fundraising and awareness campaign. Our sincere appreciation goes to Puan Sri Wendy for her engaging, insightful though sobering 45-minute talk. One well-worth taking heed of.
