The Inner Wheel Club of Butterworth (IWC Butterworth) with President Santhi Sundara at the helm, was happy to welcome District Chairman Shamini Nair for a virtual Club-Visit on 6th February 2022. Club Secretary Dr Jayashri Nerali welcomed everyone warmly. Club Vice President Shanthi K Shanmugam lit the Candle of Friendship and led the reciting of the Friendship Poem. The Roll-Call was done by Dr Jayashri.


President Santhi in her address, thanked the eleven club members who participated and the District Chairman effusively. She reminded everyone that it was also the celebration of IWC Butterworth’s 3rd Anniversary of its registration with International Inner Wheel (IIW) and the club had made much progress since its inception thanks to members’ commitment and participation.


Then the meeting got underway with the protocols of adopting the previous meeting’s minutes, followed by reports presented by Club Officers. President Santhi started the ball rolling with Secretary Dr Jayashri going up next and then the updates of the various portfolios such as the Treasurer’s, Club Correspondent’s and ISO’s reports. The two latest inductees, educators Maheswari Mahalingam and Molly Anne Morris were also formally introduced. Project Updates of the main areas of focus of the current IIW term were given.


Dr Kanya Kumari Balakrishnan presented the Club’s Health initiatives such as the mask distribution projects to 3 hospitals on the Mainland of Penang and also informative health talks given by her for the benefit of Club members. Past President Lucy Barrock gave a presentation of the club’s 8 Education Projects which include some ongoing and also upcoming projects. President Santhi herself spoke on the Empowerment and Opportunities the Club had created with its Sewing Machine Project which benefited 5 women from economically challenged backgrounds who are all reportedly doing well.


Assistant Secretary Gurmit Kaur gave an update on the Club’s 6 Social Service Projects which included its Festive Season Charities. Past Assistant Treasurer Jayalatha presented an overview of the 5 fellowship projects undertaken by the club which saw enthusiastic member participation.


District Chairman Shamini Nair in her address shared that she is originally from Penang and would love to visit her roots in Juru. She appreciated the gifts of a pewter plaque and the bouquet of flowers which were sent to her.


She remembered fondly her participation in the Club’s Inaugural meeting and its Charter Night in 2019. She praised members for their loyalty and support of President Santhi’s leadership which has seen the Club thriving as never before. She encouraged recruitment of more members and reminded all present of one of the tenets of Inner Wheel: True Friendship.


In the discussion on Open Matters, the District Chairman gave some pointers as to what the club could do to embrace International Inner Wheel President Ebe Martinez’ goal to bring awareness to Cervical Cancer. Members listened attentively and President Santhi gave her commitment to look into doing a suitable project to achieve this.


DC Shamini then thanked everyone graciously and bid farewell. It was a well organised meeting and the PowerPoint slides show-cased an impressive array of achievements for the seven months of term 2021-2022.
