D I Y tempeh workshop
Inner Wheel Club of Melaka
25 February 2022
The Inner Wheel Club of Melaka (IWCM) carried out a successful collaborative DIY Organic Tempeh Making Workshop with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Melaka on 25th February 2022 at NCSM premise, Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Melaka. This workshop highlights the second Sustainable Living Skills initiative for Women project embarked by IWCM for the year 2021-2022. It was conducted by none other than our Club Correspondent, Ms Petrina Goh, a passionate proponent of Environmental Sustainability in our daily lives and community.
The DIY Organic Tempeh making social project was organised to support NCSM, Melaka’s cancer patients and survivors with sustainable living skills specifically in the making of organic tempeh for their own consumption. It aims to encourage the women to make, cook and eat local organic foods that promote good health, upskill their home cooking skills through the creative ways of using their home-made tempeh products and to inspire them to start a home-based tempeh business that will help to increase their personal incomes.
The project involves voluntary sponsorship from all registered participants who pay a fee of rm120 each. The fee includes a complimentary tempeh starter kit for the registrant, who gets to invite a guest participant from NCSM with a complimentary tempeh starter kit as well. This translates to 1 registered participant and 1 guest participant from NCSM and 2 tempeh starter kits.
The Tempeh Workshop attracted an overwhelming response from 39 participants. Owing to strict SOPs enforced at NCSM premises of not more than 20 people onsite, 19 participants followed the workshop activities through the online Zoom platform. We had a pleasant surprise visit from District 330 Deputy National Representative Parimala Satheesan who attended the workshop accompanied by her husband.
Petrina Goh, the workshop presenter gave an excellent talk on the goodness of eating tempeh, the health benefits derived from this product which has gained much recognition as a superfood due to its high protein and nutritive benefits. She meticulously demonstrated the different stages of bean preparation and fermentation process, walked participants through the tempeh milk fruit smoothie drinks and teriyaki tempeh sandwich process. She also shared expert tips and advice on the dos and don’ts in tempeh making from her vast years of experience doing and presenting talks on tempeh cooking workshops. Participants from both Zoom and onsite platforms engaged interactively with the presenter during the workshop with pertinent questions on specific procedure and clarifying doubts on the tempeh process. The Tempeh Workshop ended on a high note when the delighted onsite participants were told they would each receive a tempeh starter kit, a cup of dragon fruit tempeh milk smoothie drink and a teriyaki tempeh sandwich box to bring home for good measure. The tempeh starter kits were couriered to Zoom participants prior to the workshop.
In appreciation, the Inner Wheel Club Of Melaka wishes to convey our grateful thanks to the following:
