In conjunction with International Women’s Day on 8 March 2022, the Inner Wheel Club of Kuantan/Indera Mahkota (IWC Kuantan IM) decided to do its part for the benefit of an often-overlooked group of women as they are out of sight and their needs are seldom prioritised. The club contributed eight cartons of sanitary pads which is the equivalent of 384 packets for the use of the women inmates incarcerated at the Bentong Prison in Pahang.

Puan Siti Norasidah, a representative from the Prison revealed that of the 3,000 inmates housed in the facility, 350 are women. These ladies are serving time for offences ranging from drug-related offences to thefts.

Sanitary napkins which are usually in very short supply in the prison are used sometimes at the rate of one per woman for a whole day. These are at times even cut up to be shared due to the severe shortage of this essential item.

This is actually an ongoing project for IWC Kuantan IM which first initiated this activity in 2019.  The club has undertaken to supply these personal care items to the inmates from time to time. The Club also managed to get sponsorship for the implementation of the project.

IWC Kuantan IM plans to continue with its community service initiatives and empower women with its projects in the state of Pahang. This is in line with International Inner Wheel’s social theme for 2021-2022: STRONG WOMEN STRONGER WORLD.
