The Inner Wheel Club of Butterworth recently, donated preloved ethnic clothes such as sarees and Punjabi suits to Greater Action (GA) at its centre in Bandar Baru, Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. This is a non-profit organisation working with marginalised refugees. The project was initiated and completed on 5th March 2022 by Charter member Sornakumari Dhurairaj.

At the centre, beautiful cushions, bags, quilts, pouches, kimonos etc. are created from upcycled materials by talented Afghan Refugee women. All the proceeds from the sales of the products go towards sustaining the livelihoods of the 250 Afghan families who are refugees under the Centre’s care. The women also cater Afghani meals for gatherings on prebooked dining orders as well as sell homemade cookies and jams.

This project spearheaded by Sorna as she is affectionately known, was well received by President Santhi Sundara and members of IWC Butterworth who gave away their lovely preloved clothes for the project. It was for a worthy cause and will definitely uplift the refugees and their families which is in line with International Inner Wheel’s focus on empowering women and children from economically challenged backgrounds.
