On 22nd May 2022, six members of the Inner Wheel Club of Butterworth led by President Santhi Sundara and Vice President Shanthi Shanmugam took an hour or so off their weekly Sunday morning routines to bring Hari Raya cheer to thirty-two sweet little girls. The ladies made their way to a Home for girls below six years of age, Rumah Jagaan Permata Kasih in Permatang Janggus, Bukit Mertajam bearing gifts of 32 kilograms of powdered milk for the girls who are all residents of the Home.

The caretaker in charge, Ustazah Hafizah had made an urgent request for milk for her young charges. IWC Butterworth’s Executive Committee secured approval for the project during the last club meeting and the fine tuning was done at the recent monthly Committee meeting.

The girls are from poverty-stricken families who have surrendered them to the Home to ensure that their basic necessities are met while their parents try to sort out other problems. IWC Butterworth’s members were touched at how lovingly the children were being cared for by the staff and it was a joy indeed to see the little ones playing and interacting with one another as only children can.

The girls then took turns to show their respects to Club members in the traditional Malay style of kissing the right hand of each of the ladies and saying ‘Terima Kasih’ or Thank You. This simple yet loving gesture of gratitude was heart-warming indeed.

Plans are afoot to provide clothes and look into the physical well-being of the girls by checking on their health and acquiring healthy food for their consumption from time to time. This would be in line with the International Inner Wheel theme of bestowing health on women and girls.
