The Ripple Mattress and Ice Cream Project at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM)
Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur
30 November 2022
On the 30th Nov. 2022 (Wed.) at 10.30 am, 15 members of the Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur (IWCKL) visited Menara Utama, University Malaya Medical Center or Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM). The occasion was to deliver Ripple Mattresses and Ice Cream to the Gynaecology / Oncology wards.
Present to grace the meaningful occasion were:
IWCKL was proud to announce that RM 8,000 was raised to buy 32 pieces of Ripple Mattresses at RM 250 per piece. The Club thanks all donors and sponsors of the project. The Club is appreciative of the efforts of Puan Sri Nora who coordinated and put in superb effort in raising funds from among relatives, friends and via donations from fellow club-members.
What started the ball rolling stamped from her casual conversation with Professor Ida Normiha of the Gastroenterology Department. It came to the Club’s attention that PPUM was short of Ripple Mattresses. The club is honoured to have been able to provide for the needs of the patients in the hospital.
Ripple Mattress, also known as air mattress provide alternating pressure in different compartments. This helps to relieve pressure and prevent bed sores whilst helping to improve blood circulation.
The mattresses will be distributed to various departments for the benefit of adult cancer patients at the Oncology-Gynaecology wards. They are inflated to accommodate the patients’ needs.
The mattresses are not bulky when deflated and hence store easily. According to Dr Mohmmad Salleh bin Yahya, the donation of these ripple mattresses is greatly appreciated. They are very suitable and greatly needed in the wards.
The ice cream project is not entirely a new project because in 2019 IWCKL initiated their 1st Ice Cream Project for the Paediatric Oncology ward in PPUM for 10 warded and 30 day-care children. Prior to 2017, IWCKL has had 20 years history of long relationship with General Hospital Kuala Lumpur in providing Ice Cream to the Paediatric Oncology patients. The Club is grateful to Datin Linda Koay for her generous sponsorship all these years towards the project.
IWCKL is happy to extend a 2nd Ice Cream project to the Adults Day Care Gynaecology/ Oncology ward for a year’s trial which was enthusiastically recommended by Professor Woo. This Ice Cream project is sponsored by Datin Regina. The Club appreciates member Margaret Yee who has been helping and taking charge of both the ice cream projects since inception.
Due to the parking problems in PPUM, all members congregated at the Spastic Centre to carpool. Member Lan Mee hosted a simple breakfast at their Sunshine Cafeteria.
