A 'sew and sew' day
Inner Wheel Club of Alor Setar
20 May 2023
Sewing can be very therapeutic but so many have lost the skill, if it was a skill that was had in the first place, that is. When a member mentioned that she has a friend, Boon Soai, who is churning out masterpieces, like bed covers, lovely sequined bags, chair backs, cushion covers, door stoppers, place mats, etc., and is willing to impart her knowledge to anyone who is willing to refresh their skills or even learn to thread a needle properly, it was like a blast from the past for some members who realized that their needlework kit had been put away and this jolt was exactly what was needed for them to put their kit back into good use again.
A rendezvous was quickly arranged for members to meet in the lovely home of Boon Soai on the morning of 20 May, for a potluck breakfast, followed by a lesson on making ribbon roses and granny’s crochet.
After a sumptuous breakfast, members had a field day twiddling their extremely stiff thumbs and fingers to learn basic stitches and crochet. Then, everyone’s joy knew no bounds when a tiny strip of a velvet ribbon transformed into a lovely rose, under the watchful eyes and guidance of Boon Soai. Squeals of delight reverberated into the quiet atmosphere, almost as if members had made a startling discovery of their hitherto unknown talent.
This day was a welcome change from the normal projects that IWC AS had been carrying out. Besides forging closer ties as members laughed, chatted and enjoyed each other’s company, everyone felt reassured that their own homes would soon boast of some pretty handiwork, now that Boon Soai had promised that she could be called upon to advise and guide when help is needed.
What a fabulously fun day which did not promise to be the last, going by members’ enthusiasm. Huge hugs to Boon Soai, who responded that the members too had brought her joy by enabling her to depart her knowledge and skills to them.
