A Linguistic Adventure

On 21 October, a group of enthusiastic members from IWC AS gathered at the home of member, Tengku Maheran, the purpose being to embark on their very first lesson in the art of speaking Thai. The decision was motivated by the Club’s proximity to the Thai border and the realisation that having a basic understanding of the Thai language could prove invaluable when crossing the border to shop or savour an authentic Thai meal. It is also believed that learning a new language can improve memory and brain functions, thereby enabling people to remember new words and make connections between them. Thus, age is not a factor in learning a new language.

The teacher for this linguistic adventure was Miss Bussakorn. Patiently, she led the members through their first preliminary lesson, and soon, it became evident that mastering Thai would be no small feat, but the spirit of curiosity and determination prevailed.

For an hour, they diligently persevered, and by the end of the class, they could greet each other with smiles, say thank you, and more importantly, negotiate a discount for things they may want to buy.

October 21 also happened to be Tengku Maheran’s birthday. The class adjourned to wish her well and relish a scrumptious cake accompanied by tea, celebrating both linguistic accomplishments and small milestones.

As they left Tengku Maheran’s home, members were already looking forward to their next class, eager to dive deeper into the world of the Thai language. They felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing that they had taken the first step toward something new and exciting.
