Pink October
In conjunction with “Pink October” Breast Cancer Awareness Month, President Amy Nair of Kelab Inner Wheel Johor Bahru led the team to participate in the event “Pink Zumba’. The event was held in an effort to spread awareness and knowledge about breast cancer. It was organised by the Breast and Endocrine Surgery Department of Hospital Sultan Ismail Johor Bahru (HSIJB) in collaboration with Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB).
The focal point of this campaign was a comprehensive and insightful Breast Cancer Awareness Forum. The occasion was graced by speakers including a surgeon from HSIJB, oncologist, physiotherapist, dietitian and the JB Breast Cancer Support Group. Their collective expertise emphasized the significance of early screening as it plays an important role in early detection leading to more effective treatment.
Speakers focused on the importance of engaging in physical activities that resonate with personal interests and consulting reputable sources when seeking information about cancer. They urged attendees to refrain from spending money for treatments that promise a speedy recovery without proper credentials. Furthermore, the significance of a long-term approach in aiding recovery and post-treatment therapy, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), was recommended.
The event wasn’t solely confined to discussions. Participants were treated to a lively Zumba session. Food carts, food booths and informational booths on cancer were also available. A mobile mammogram bus was provided, allowing individuals to undergo free screenings conveniently.
What truly stood out was the collective effort and unity of the community. The organizers employed simple language and engaging activities to ensure that the public, regardless of background or expertise, could easily comprehend the critical information shared. Attendees remained engaged and committed throughout, showcasing their dedication to understanding and spreading awareness about breast cancer. Since Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among women this event served as a reminder that knowledge, support, and early action are formidable weapons.
The members of IWCJB felt satisfied participating in the event as it gave them lots of insights about cancer and encouraged everyone to take proactive steps in their health journey.
