Why Be A Navigator”
This is a virtual, introductory talk to the Patient Navigation programme, known as Guided Patient Support (GPS) by Ms. Viji from the National Cancer Society Malaysia. An analogy of a ship captain like a captain of a ship who navigates the ship to dock. The journeys with the patient from diagnosis until completion of treatment.
Key points of patient navigators proactively:
● Guide, support and orient patients through the health care system.
● Match patients’ unmet needs to appropriate resources to decrease fragmentation.
● Improve access and promote the integration of care.
Patient navigators can be:
● a professional (e.g. registered nurse, social worker)
● lay person (with patient navigation training)
● peer (e.g. an individual who has experience living with a particular condition).
Post programme, few of the Charter Members will be trained for this patient navigation programme under National Cancer Society Malaysia.
