A Visit to Be Home (OKU)

On January 19, 2024, President Daljit spearheaded a group of four members from the Inner Wheel Club (IWC) of Penang to visit Be Home, a centre dedicated to the special care of individuals with disabilities (Persatuan Kebajikan Anak-Anak OKU Taman Island, Penang). This facility, located at Lorong Delima 3, Island Glades, Penang, accommodates 30 special-needs children and adults with diverse health conditions. With a staff of seven caregivers, including a domestic helper, the centre provides a nurturing environment for individuals with unique needs. Some residents are orphans, while others have been placed there by parents who are unable to provide specialized care.

Remarkably, Be Home stands out for its airy and clean atmosphere, fostering a sense of comfort for its residents. The residents, despite their diverse conditions, display remarkable sociability, with some being particularly affectionate and interactive with members of the Inner Wheels. Notably, caregiver Joyce plays a crucial role by teaching residents basic mathematics and essential life skills. More capable residents are also engaged in learning simple chores to contribute to the functioning of the centre.

The purpose of IWC Penang’s visit to Be Home was to fulfill some items on the centre’s wish list, contributing to the well-being and support of the special-needs individuals residing there.
