Fundraising Project In Aid Of Datuk And Datin Ooi Eow Jin


In early August 2024, President Lena of Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur (IWCKL) received word of an elderly couple needing urgent help. It turned out to be the renowned music-composer Datuk Ooi Eow Jin and his wife, Datin Elaine. A gifted pianist and a RTM maestro, he had composed many famous songs sung by Alleycats, Sudirman and Frances Yip. But now, he is 86 suffering from severe Alzheimer’s and bed ridden. They have no source of income,no next of kin and visits from well-wishers have all but dried up.

A Fundraising Lunch was quickly put together and held at Nyonya Love Restaurant. Response was overwhelming from members as well as friends. On 22nd August 2024, 50 members and guests arrived to partake of the mouth-watering array of delicious Nyonya delicacies, ‘compliments’ of a mother- daughter outfit famed for their delectable Nyonya cuisine. The spirit of fellowship coupled with a sense of purpose in assisting a once-great man defined that Luncheon. Our beloved special guest, YAB Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong too enhanced the event with her ever-comforting presence.

More than RM10,000 was raised in no time; a heartfelt donation was even received from a member’s friend in memory of her dearly departed sibling. How well indeed the milk of human kindness flowed.

The presentation of gifts, in cash and in kind was made on Friday, the 23rd. Effusive with her words of thanks, Datin Elaine shared how when hope was almost lost, along came blessed hands to give her some light.

President Lena wishes to thank all members and friends of IWCKL for their belief in doing good. And on behalf of Datuk and Datin Elaine, once again, for your grace and compassion, thank you.
