UNiTE to Illuminate Exchange 106 for Orange the World

On the evening of November 25th, 2024, the Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur North joined forces with the broader Inner Wheel District 330 community to participate in a significant event aimed at raising awareness about violence against women. The highlight of the evening was the illumination of the iconic Exchange 106 tower in Kuala Lumpur, a powerful symbol of solidarity and hope.

The United Nations Secretary-General launched in 2008 the campaign, UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women. The signature colour of the campaign is orange. As a bright and optimistic colour, orange represents a future free from violence against women and girls.

Every year, the UNiTE campaign focuses on a specific theme in support of the global, civil-society-led 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

From 25 November to 10 December every year, UNiTE calls on people everywhere to wear the colour orange and take action to end violence against women and girls in communities, at home, in public spaces, in schools and workplaces, during conflict and in times of peace. This event was a testament to the club’s commitment to the global Orange the World campaign. By lighting up the city in orange, the club sent a strong message that violence against women will not be tolerated.

The illumination of Exchange 106 was a breathtaking sight, captivating the city skyline. As darkness enveloped the city, the tower’s crown was bathed in a warm, inviting orange glow, symbolizing the warmth and compassion that should be extended to all victims of violence. This powerful visual spectacle served as a reminder of the urgent need to address the issue of gender-based violence.

As Maya Angelou once said, “It is time for us to work as a collective force. A force for peace, a force for justice, a force for love.” By coming together, we can illuminate the path to a future where every woman and girl can live free from fear and violence. Let us commit to being that force of change.
