Seminar – Health of the Older Person
On December 7, 2024, a significant event unfolded at Dewan Bunga Raya of the Malaysian Medical Association MMA). The occasion was a seminar dedicated to the health of older persons and the Orange the World campaign, organized by the MMA Committee for the Health of the Older Person in collaboration with the Inner Wheel Club (IWC) of Kuala Lumpur North and Kelab Inner Wheel Parklands.
The seminar commenced at 9 am with a warm welcome address from Datin Dr Jayanthi Krishnan, the Chairperson of the MMA HOP Committee. This set the stage for a series of insightful presentations by distinguished experts.
Datin Ranuga Devy, a seasoned advocate and solicitor, was the first speaker. She delved into the intricate legal landscape surrounding aging, highlighting the potential legal implications that older adults may face. Her presentation offered valuable insights into safeguarding the rights and well-being of the elderly.
Following Datin Ranuga’s presentation, Dr. Farina Binti Mohd Salleh, a renowned consultant emergency physician, took the stage. She focused on the specific cardiac concerns of older adults, emphasizing the importance of preventive care and timely intervention. Her expertise shed light on the unique challenges faced by the elderly in maintaining heart health.
The afternoon session featured Dr. Phrindha Murugays, a psychiatrist from Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah. Dr. Phrindha addressed the pressing issue of mental health and elder abuse, underscoring the significance of early intervention and support. Her presentation highlighted the importance of recognizing the signs of mental illness and taking proactive steps to prevent abuse.
The seminar concluded with closing remarks from President Sarojini R Nadasan of IWC KL North. She expressed gratitude to all attendees, speakers, and organizers for their contributions to the event’s success. She emphasized the collective responsibility to promote dignity, respect, and compassionate care for older persons.
Throughout the seminar, the audience actively engaged with the speakers, posing thought-provoking questions and sharing personal experiences. The discussions highlighted the shared concern for the well-being of older adults and the need for continued efforts to improve their quality of life.
To symbolise awareness and support for older adults, attendees were encouraged to wear orange attire. The event also distributed orange bags and oranges as a token of appreciation.
As the seminar drew to a close, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to advocate for the rights and well-being of older persons. The event served as a powerful platform for raising awareness, promoting understanding, and inspiring action.
