CESM Graduation

The graduation ceremony for the CESM (Creating Enterprising Special Mothers) Project took place on Saturday, 30th August 2025, at the Community Hall in Desa Mentari, Selangor.

This impactful initiative is a collaborative effort between the Inner Wheel Club of Petaling Jaya (IWCPJ) and the Rotary Club of Damansara (RCD), aimed at empowering mothers from the B40 income group by equipping them with practical skills in tailoring and baking—ultimately supporting their journey toward financial independence.

The concept for this joint project was first introduced by Mr. Richard Jacob, Immediate Past President (IPP) of RCD, and proposed to Ms. Usha Ramakrishnan, IPP of IWCPJ, in late 2024.

The program officially launched in April 2025, following the identification of a suitable training venue and the engagement of two certified trainers: Mr. Darren, an experienced baker, and Ms. Thilaga, a professional tailor. Participants were selected through a series of interviews, with 14 women ultimately chosen for the training program.

• Baking classes were held every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
• Tailoring classes took place on Tuesdays from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

The project spanned four months and concluded successfully in August 2025, with all expenses equally shared between RCD and IWCPJ. Leadership and support throughout the program were actively provided by members of IWCPJ. The tailoring classes were led by President Jamuna, while the baking sessions were conducted by PDS Jayanthi. IWCPJ members also took turns to oversee and assist during the training sessions.

At the graduation ceremony, each participant received a certificate of completion, along with essential tools to support their entrepreneurial journey:

• Tailoring participants received a sewing machine.
• Baking participants received an oven and mixer set.

Additionally, a talk on entrepreneurial skills was delivered by Ms. Sheyma, an HR trainer, who will also continue to mentor the graduates as they embark on their business ventures.

The event concluded on a joyful note with a Western-style lunch prepared by Mr. Darren, followed by the cutting of a celebratory cake.

This collaboration between the Rotary Club of Damansara and the Inner Wheel Club of Petaling Jaya serves as an excellent model for community development. By combining skill-based training, entrepreneurial guidance, and essential equipment support, the CESM Project represents a holistic and sustainable approach to uplifting and empowering low-income women.
