Sharing the Spirit of Deepavali with a Helping Hand

We believe that every act of kindness creates a meaningful impact, even the smallest act of support helps our community thrive. Guided by Inner Wheel’s core motto, “Friendship and Service,” and inspired by the spirit of Deepavali, where giving is considered highly auspicious and a true expression of generosity and compassion, the Inner Wheel Club of Subang Selangor (IWCSS) was privileged to celebrate an early Deepavali on 11 October at Thangam Illam, Taman Pandan Indah, with 25 children, four young adults with special needs, and seven seniors above 50 years of age.

When a request was made for a fresh coat of paint to brighten the centre for Deepavali, President Rajani and a small team conducted a site visit a month earlier. During the recce, they were saddened to see mould-ridden walls contributing to a musty environment. In conversation with the Secretary, Ms Saseikala, it became clear that beyond repainting, support for a Deepavali lunch celebration would be deeply appreciated. A proposal was promptly presented to members and approved with a budget.

A heartfelt hug to the dedicated team who brought the project to life: President Rajani, VP Tara, PP Indira, PP Shanthy, Mekala, Santa, and Malli. Duties were well delegated and coordination was seamless. Mekala, as event coordinator, sourced KFC, much to the children’s delight; PP Shanthy organised games; and Malli, though unable to attend, helped by purchasing and packing the goody bags. PP Indira, VP Tara and Manon generously sponsored laddus and murukku.

While sourcing a contractor, we were heartened to learn that a good Samaritan had already funded the repainting of the exterior and ground floor, an uplifting reminder of the kindness that exists within our community.

Stepping into the centre, the transformation was immediately evident. Even the little ones proudly pointed out their newly painted walls. The children welcomed us with prayers, followed by two lively dances and songs, filling the space with joy and spontaneity. Games brought everyone together, from the elderly to those with special needs, and it was touching to see the children participate so graciously.

It was a celebration of colour, care, and community—true to the spirit of Helping Hands.
