Zero Waste - Small Steps, Big Impact



When the Inner Wheel Club of Subang Selangor (IWCSS) first explored the idea of conducting a waste management awareness programme at a secondary school, the objective seemed straightforward: to educate young minds on sustainable living and encourage environmentally responsible habits. What unfolded, however, became a valuable learning experience for everyone involved.

Led by Organising Chair and Past President Ms Sumodhini and her team, with the support of club member and teacher Ms Asha Rani Suppiah, IWCSS successfully organised a Zero Waste Management talk at Taman Sri Muda National Secondary School (SMK Taman Sri Muda) on 22 April 2026. The programme aimed to inspire students aged 14 and 15 to rethink their relationship with waste and understand how small changes in daily habits can contribute to a healthier planet.

The underlying message was simple but powerful: if young people can be encouraged to view plastic and other environmentally harmful materials differently, they can become catalysts for lasting change. Developing sustainable habits early in life helps nurture a generation that values responsible consumption and care for the environment.

The session was conducted by Ts. Wan Azizul Faiz, a consultant with GSR Environmental Consultancy Pivate Limited, a dynamic and engaging speaker. Through his interactive sessions, he encourages students to reduce single-use plastics, make environmentally conscious choices, and adopt responsible consumption habits. Using discussions, thought-provoking questions, and small rewards, he keeps learners engaged while reinforcing key environmental lessons, inspiring these young individuals to take meaningful steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Participants learned about Malaysia’s landfill challenges, the limitations of plastic recycling, and practical ways to manage organic waste through home composting. They also discovered how organic waste can be transformed into useful products such as fertiliser and biogas. In keeping with the programme’s environmental theme, IWCSS presented attendees with exercise books made from recycled paper.

IWCSS extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education for granting permission for the programme, and to the SMK Taman Sri Muda Principal, Encik Ahmad Za’im Faisal, for welcoming the initiative. Special recognition is due to Ms Asha and the school’s English Panel teachers for their dedication, commitment, and unwavering support throughout the programme. The club also gratefully acknowledges the presence of Deputy Principal Puan Azura binti Ahamed Hambal.

The success of the programme was made possible through the perseverance and dedication of Organising Chair Ms Sumodhini and her team. Finally, sincere appreciation goes to Ts. Wan Azizul Faiz for sharing his expertise and passion for sustainability.
