Tribute to a Life of Grace and Service: Dato’ Dr Madhuri Majumder
The Inner Wheel Club of Ipoh East, Malaysia mourns the passing of our beloved Honorary Member Dato’ Dr Madhuri Majumder (1933–2026) at the age of 93. Affectionately known as the “Mother Teresa of Ipoh,” she was a beacon of hope, a pioneer in medicine and the embodiment of Inner Wheel’s enduring value of selfless service. Her extraordinary dedication to humanity was internationally recognised when she was bestowed the prestigious Margarette Golding Award in 2003, one of the highest honours conferred by International Inner Wheel upon individuals who have rendered exceptional personal service to humanity.
A Pioneer in Medicine and Humanity
Dato’ Dr Madhuri Majumder was a pioneering Malaysian dermatologist and humanitarian whose life was defined by ground-breaking achievement and unwavering compassion. As Malaysia’s first female dermatologist, she broke barriers in medicine. In Ipoh, her clinic in Fair Park became a sanctuary of care where countless underprivileged patients were treated with dignity and often without charge, reflecting her belief that medicine was a sacred act of service. Beyond medicine, she was a visionary leader in mental health advocacy, serving as President of the Perak Society for the Promotion of Mental Health (PSPMH) from 1986, where she championed rehabilitation programmes using art, music, counselling and occupational therapy, and worked tirelessly to reduce stigma by referring to patients as “residents” to preserve their dignity. She co-established one of Malaysia’s earliest community-based mental health initiatives through the Luther Clinic in 1969 and her service extended across education, women’s empowerment, environmental causes and animal welfare, including founding the Majumder Scholarship Fund and the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A true trailblazer, she also held multiple “firsts” in leadership, including becoming the first female Chairperson of the Perak Malaysian Medical Association branch and the first female President of the Rotary Club of Greentown, while continuing her lifelong commitment to service even in later years, including supporting community efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic and mentoring social initiatives in Ipoh.
Her Legacy Within Inner Wheel
To the members of the Inner Wheel Club of Ipoh East, Dato’ Dr Madhuri was far more than an Honorary Member. She was a mentor, inspiration and cherished friend. Her presence at community projects, gatherings and celebrations brought warmth, wisdom and encouragement to everyone around her. Many fondly remember working alongside her in service projects, celebrating birthdays in the comfort of her beautiful home and witnessing first-hand her extraordinary generosity and humility. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy continues to live on in the countless lives she touched, the institutions she strengthened and the values she so gracefully embodied.
As we reflect on her remarkable 93-year journey, we honour her memory by recommitting ourselves to the spirit of compassion, friendship and service that she championed so passionately.
