Visit to the Shelter home for Children

On 15 August 2026, seven members of IWC Kuala Lumpur North and some of their family members joined us on our visit to the Shelter Home for Children in Petaling Jaya.

The Shelter Home was opened in June 1981 by Mr. James Nayagam. This home currently shelters 31 children aged between 5 and 18 years, and there are a total of 15 girls and 16 boys housed in two different homes. These children are referred to the home through the courts, as these children have been abused or abandoned, and through community referrals such as single mothers who are not able to care for their children temporarily due to economic or family circumstances.

Apart from providing care, shelter, and food for the children, the home also provides counselling to these children, and the primary objective of the home is to educate them, and they continuously stress on the importance of education. Most of the children finish their SPM (Secondary School) before leaving the home, and some have also graduated from the University. The home has also instilled rules for good behavior, politeness, and honesty, to take care of personal hygiene, and to carry out light chores in their home.

During the briefing by one of the staff of the Shelter, we had a good insight of the home and also noticed the cleanliness of the home and it’s surrounding.

In our support for the home, we took groceries and food items such as rice, cooking oil, milk powder, milo, maggie noodles, sardine, chocolates, sweets and biscuits. The management were truly grateful and thanked us for the food items that we provided.

Going forward, our club may consider providing groceries to the home on a regular basis, have activities with the children or even consider “Adopting” a child or two on a yearly basis which costs RM60.00 per child per month.

After carrying out this worthwhile project, our team adjourned for lunch at a nearby restaurant, and continued our fellowship and returned home with the satisfaction of knowing that we helped the home in a small way.
