My dear Inner Wheel friends,

Let me take this opportunity to wish all of you a Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

We live in this wonderful country Malaysia and we have the opportunity to share the joyous celebrations of many different cultures.  So, my Hari Raya wishes are not only to our Muslim friends but also to all Malaysians.

I remember when I was young, my little neighbours used to line up in the front of my house early on Hari Raya Aidilfitri all dressed up in their finest.  My father had a bowl of coins and a bowl of sweets ready in anticipation.  All the little ones would come and hold my father’s hand and ask for forgiveness for any wrongdoings during the year.  My father would wish them Selamat Hari Raya and send them off with a sweet and a coin.  That simple deed brought such joy and happiness to all the little ones. Such was the practice year after year.  Mind you, my father was a Hindu as I am.  This was the practice some 40 years ago.  Later during the day, my sisters and I would go from house to house and savour all the ketupat and the rendang and we never had to tell them that we did not eat beef.  They knew. They only served us chicken rendang.  Such was the respect among the people in my hometown.

I really wish and hope this is the practice until today as I have now moved to the city.
